- Returnable Bottles
- We have an ongoing effort to collect returnable bottles that can be left off
at the OLI garage. Most of the time people bring these when they drop off
newspapers at the recycling truck on Saturday mornings. Your donation of
returnable bottles helps the environment, as well as supporting youth trips to
Steubenville and Juarez, and provides a job and some income to the people at the
Templeton Developmental Center who process the bottles for us. Everyone
wins with this project.
- Donations to the Father Marcotte Scholarship
- Kindly consider a donation to the Father Marcotte Scholarship Fund as a
suitable memorial for a loved one. This annual award is given to local
college-bound Catholic seniors who best exemplify Christian principles and
personal involvement in Parish life at the Cluster.
- New Hospital Privacy Laws
- New privacy laws concerning patients in hospitals and nursing homes affect
our Cluster ministry to serve the sick. No longer will hospitals or nursing
homes provide the names of Catholics in their institutions, without the
expressed consent of the patient, family member, or resident. Nor can the
Eucharistic ministers who visit in the name of the Cluster be allowed to
automatically forward the names to the Rectory; this can only be done with
consent. There are three instances that come to mind where this will pose
a problem. The first is if a patient says "No, I don't want to bother the
priests"; the hospital will then not put that name on this list and we will not
know the patient is there even if we visit others many times. The second
instance is where the patient is unable to express consent, even in the danger
of near death; the institution will not automatically call for a Priest even if
they know he or she is a Catholic (this will need to be handled by family
members who request the sacraments when they become aware of the situation).
The third case is where a non-practicing Catholic doesn't quite know where he or
she belongs or is unsure of what their status is; the Church will not know about
them under the new system.
- In all cases it is important that people know the Church wants to serve them
as well as to respect privacy.
